A note from Bart Mason (president of the Isle of Iowa PHC)
Greetings! I am sending this communication to you as a special invitation to invite your club to get involved in what may be a “once in a lifetime” opportunity to celebrate & honor trop rock music! As you may (or may not) have heard, our club will be partnering with one of the most historic music venues in American pop culture history to bring the world of trop rock music to their legendary stage.
Over Labor Day Weekend 2018, we will host Island Fever Showcase at the Surf featuring some of the biggest names in Trop Rock. The Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Designated by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a Rock & Roll Landmark the Surf was the final venue in which Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens & J.P. ‘The Big Bopper’ Richardson performed. The three rock & roll icons were killed in a tragic plane crash just outside of Clear Lake as they left enroute to their next tour performance. The tragedy is widely referred to as “The Day the Music Died” and the Surf became “…the bedrock of where the sound and attitude of rock and roll changed forever.”
Trop Rock music has never graced such an iconic & sacred stage. Musicians, fans & promoters of the genre all agree that this very well may be Trop Rock’s greatest moment! It presents an incredible opportunity to take the musical genre of trop rock to a whole new level! Through our conversations with the Surf, we have been able to reach an agreement that allows us to invite a few select clubs (and our fellow parrot heads) to get an early “perk” associated with this event. So here’s the deal…
Through our negotiations with the Surf, our club (Isle of Iowa) is able to offer you the opportunity to purchase advance VIP Tickets to the event before they go on-sale to the general public. These tickets are $125 each and include reserved seating on the floor, a special commemorative event badge, & a special “bling bag” filled with some cool stuff. These tickets are extremely limited. This special seating section will be located right behind the dancing section on the iconic Surf Ballroom Dance Floor – it doesn’t get any better than that! Plus, you get an actual chair – not a 1940’s hard wooden booth!
These special tickets are extremely limited (due to the size of the venue) & will most definitely sell out (likely pretty fast)! The Surf has agreed to give parrot heads the first crack at these seats. As stated, these tickets are $125 and include all of the things that I have already mentioned. Most importantly, it also includes two full days of music at the Surf featuring at least 12 different entertainers representing some of the biggest names in Trop Rock! Epic? I think so!! Once in a lifetime opportunity? You betcha!!!!
In order to get in on the pre-sale, we would ideally like your club to commit to (and pay for) the tickets in lots of eight ($1,000). Each reserved table seats 8 people and the clubs that receive & accept this invitation can choose to purchase 8 tickets (1 table) for $1,000; 16 tickets (2 tables) for $2,000; etc. You can then sell these tickets to your members to recover your investment. Basically, if you know that some of your members will have an interest in this event (which I am sure they will), this is a no brainer!
In case you are wondering, General Admission tickets will go on-sale through the Surf Ballroom Box Office (on-line, phone or in-person) beginning on Friday, December 15. At this time, only 2 day (full event) General Admission tickets will be sold. These will be $90 per ticket & do not include any of the things that you get with the VIP ticket (plus no reserved seating).
While I can’t officially announce the musical acts yet (yes - we do have agreements in place), I can say that several of the featured acts are current Trop Rock Music Association Award Nominees (how’s that for a hint)! I can also say that it is “highly likely” that we will have members of the Coral Reefer Band as part of the line-up too. Entertainment negotiations are ongoing (in collaboration with the Surf) and I anticipate some really big surprises will come about. You’ll just have to trust me when I say that it’s going to be one hell of a line-up on this iconic stage! You can share this information with your club members if you feel that you need to in order to get ticket commitments.
As far as hotel reservations go, I would recommend that your club members make a reservation for, at minimum Friday, Saturday & Sunday nights. There are a smaller number of hotels in Clear Lake than there are in Mason City. Mason City is just a five-mile drive so that presents a great lodging opportunity as well. You can get some great hotel deals this far in advance with a discount (AAA) or through a third party site!
So – the bottom line you need to take from this email is to make your hotel reservation now & purchase those VIP tickets while we have them! I promise you it will be the best $125 that you have ever spent!
QUESTIONS THAT BOTHER ME SO.....
What is Island Fever Showcase? Island Fever Showcase is a music festival featuring Trop Rock music sponsored jointly by the Isle of Iowa Parrot Head Club & the Surf Ballroom & Museum that will be held over Labor Day weekend in 2018. The event will feature musicians/bands that tour the country performing to fun-loving crowds at parrot head (Jimmy Buffett fans) functions. Proceeds raised from the event will be donated to charity.
Where will the event be held? Island Fever Showcase will be held in Clear Lake, Iowa at the historic Surf Ballroom. Clear Lake is located in north central Iowa approximately 90 minutes north of Des Moines and 2 hours south of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
When will the event be held? The Island Fever Showcase will be held over Labor Day weekend 2018 in Clear Lake, Iowa. The two main event days are scheduled for Saturday, September 1 & Sunday, September 2. It is anticipated that additional activities will be held on Friday, August 31 and on Monday, September 3 (early in the day).
What makes this event so unique? The Surf Ballroom is one of the most iconic stages in American music history. The tragedy is widely referred to as “The Day the Music Died” and the Surf became “…the bedrock of where the sound and attitude of rock and roll changed forever.” Trop rock music has never graced such an iconic & sacred stage. Musicians, fans & promoters of the genre all agree that this very well may be Trop Rock’s greatest moment!
What is trop rock music? Trop Rock music is a genre of music that incorporates elements and influences of rock & roll, reggae, country & Calypso music with Caribbean themes. The music often creates an “island sound” that represents a laid-back way of life. Jimmy Buffett is often referred to as the “king of Trop Rock” and other major label artists include Kenny Chesney, the Zac Brown Band, Jack Johnson & Bertie Higgins among others.
When will the entertainment line-up be released? Musicians are being booked as you read this but, due in large part to contractual obligations of some of the artists (Hint! Hint!), the line-up will likely not be finalized until sometime this spring! Entertainment announcements will begin in December & additional artists will continue to be announced well into the spring. To receive all of the latest announcements, like (and follow) the Isle of Iowa Parrot Head Club on Facebook & visit the event website atislandfeverphlocking.com.
Will Jimmy Buffett be performing? Most likely not (though one never knows just where he might show up)! However, it is possible that members of Jimmy’s famous Coral Reefer Band will be part of the line-up as they often appear & perform at events such as this. Independent singer/songwriters are the major force in Trop Rock music. The line-up will include some of the best acts in the genre. They write, produce & perform their own original music. Many who will be included in the line-up have received numerous awards & recognition from the Trop Rock Music Association. Regardless of who is on stage, you will likely hear a number of your favorite Buffett tunes!
What type of event tickets are available? Two types of tickets are currently available – VIP tickets and General Admission Two Day passes. VIP tickets are extremely limited and include a reserved seat (at a table) on the actual ballroom floor right behind the dancing section. In addition to your seat, you will also receive a special laminate event badge & a cool Bling Bag filled with a variety of treasure. These tickets are $125 per person and are extremely limited in number. Two-day General Admission tickets are also available (beginning December 15) for $90 per person. They do not include any of the special “perks” that you get with the VIP ticket. General Admission tickets do not guarantee seating (only entry). You are able to purchase a booth upgrade (if available) through the Surf for an additional fee to ensure you will have a place to sit. Additional ticket options (i.e. Single Day Passes, etc.) will only be sold (at a later date) if space permits.
Where is the best place to fly into for this event? While Clear Lake, Iowa is located right in the heartland of America and is drivable from many places, there are many airports that provide commercial air service within a relatively short drive. The closest airports include Des Moines, Iowa (100 miles); Rochester, Minnesota (100 miles); Minneapolis-St. Paul (130 miles); & Cedar Rapids, Iowa (140 miles). Many flight options are available at all of these airports.
What are my options for lodging accommodations in the area? There are many great hotels located in Clear Lake, Iowa, but they are not large properties. We recommend that you make your lodging reservations ASAP. Several of the hotels in Clear Lake have established room blocks under Isle of Iowa/Island Fever. These properties include Best Western Holiday Lodge; Microtel Inn & Suites; South Shore Inn; & Rumorz Neighborhood Hideaway. Please refer to the hotels page on our event web site for more information about our partner hotels. Since Clear Lake is a well-known Iowa tourist destination, there are also many private residences that offer rentals through Vacation Rental by Owner or through Airbnb (Airbnb.com). If you would prefer to camp, there are also many camping options available around Clear Lake. These options include: Clear Lake State Park; Oakwood RV Park; & McIntosh Woods State Park. There are also many additional hotel accommodations available in Mason City, Iowa (just a short 5 mile drive from the Surf Ballroom).
Are tickets refundable in the event that I can’t attend? Unfortunately not, but the proceeds from your ticket purchase will be used to support the charitable cause of the event.
