More than a mouthful of Parrot Head tales
HOME
The GULP is the
newsletter of St MinneSomePlace in Paradise Parrot Head Club, Inc. It
is published periodically to report all the
stories we love to tell about our Parrot Head adventures.
THE EARLY YEARS
In case you hadn't heard
the origination of the club's newsletter's title (The GULP), here's
a little history lesson. Back in late 1994, during the initial
weeks of organizing the club, it's name, etc., I knew a newsletter
was part of the administrative obligations. But what to call
it? Other clubs simply called them "newsletters". I
thought a little more creativity should be applied. So, what's
the primary tool for a task like this that is common to all Parrot
Heads in need? Well, tequila, of course. I happened to
be sitting alone one night in a bar in Madison, WI, having a
margarita, thinking about this newsletter title. The margarita
was served in a rather large goblet printed with "GULP of Mexico".
I proceeded to drink that margarita. Hmmmmm. The GULP.... a
mouthful. Another drink. Hmmmm, More than a mouthful.
And another and another. Hmmmmmmmmm. The GULP....More
than a mouthful of Parrot Head tales! I stole the glass and
still have it in my treasure chest of club memorabilia. That's
my story, and I am sticking to it! Jerry Shea, Founder

The Bistro Phlocking was held on the last Saturday of November, 1994, at the former Freddies on Lake Minnetonka, originally part of the Excelsior Park Tavern. View from the deck of Freddies, November, 1994 Freddies on the shore of Lake Minnetonka The interior of Freddies was decorated by the barkeep and whatever the club had at the time in its first month of existence The only attendee...a 150 pound cougar that was allowed to run loose in the bar! I love a place where there's no bars on the windows and no windows on the bar....and a wild animal! A month after the first phlocking, the first Holiday phlocking was held again at Freddies, now covered with a foot of freshly fallen snow. View from Freddies....we like it here! Jackson showed up to help with Parrot Head clothing and decorations. He became one of the first members. Jerry Shea, Kathy Shedd, Tim Shea, and Liz Shea showed up for the first Holiday phlocking. Kathy was incredibly helpful in getting ST MSP off the ground. Steve Tonner also showed up on a blind date with a very desperate cousin of the Shea's. A real Parrot Head at Freddies The Original Members: Kathy Shedd, Nancy and Jim Stratton, Jerry Shea, and Kathy and Scott Zander. Roxanne Thompson, Jerry Shea, and Kathy Shedd This is the event that kick started the club membership. It rained the day before and the day after but for that day, it was 95 and sunny and we enjoyed it and making new friends. Jerry Shea also learned the importance of having Jimmy Buffett music at a phlocking, thanks to the quick lesson given by the Parrot Heads who came to the island.
